Entrepreneur Levi Roots has been accused of taking his famous Reggae Reggae sauce recipe from a friend, a court heard during a two-week trial.

Mr Roots, 53, rose to prominence when he secured a £50,000 investment from ‘Dragons’ Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh on the popular BBC show Dragons’ Den.

The millionaire is now faced with a battle in the High Court, as his former friend Tony Bailey, 52, has filed a lawsuit suing Mr Roots for more than £300,000, after claiming that Mr Roots used his jerk chicken recipe to win funding from the Dragons.

Mr Roots, real name Keith Valentine Graham, ran a food stall in conjunction with Mr Bailey for 17 years, during which the pair sold jerk chicken sauces at Notting Hill Carnival.

Mr Bailey, who is originally from Jamaica, also reportedly sold the sauce in Kingston, Jamaica, prior to his migration to London in 1986.

Mr Bailey said in the High Court: “I showed him how to make it. Levi took the recipe. I gave it to him in 2006.

“I gave it to him. Levi knows the truth.”

He is suing for one third of the profits from the Reggae Reggae sauce, after claiming it was agreed that he would be going into business with Mr Roots and financial adviser Sylvester Williams.

The trial continues.
