Energy bill debts on the rise

February 22, 2010    Posted in: Debt News
It has been recently reported that 20% more people had struggled to pay their gas and electricity bills in the second half of 2009 compared to the same time period in 2008. A report from Ofgem has also confirmed that there was over a 10% increase in the number of people that had entered into a debt arrangement to get on top of their energy bills. Energy experts uSwitch.com, have also stated  that they believe these figures will increase further still over the coming months. Thomas Lyon from uSwitch said “We are in the middle of a bitter winter which could add an extra £60 onto our next quarterly bills because of the extra heating and energy we’ve all had to use,” He also suggested that the average energy bill was much higher last year than in 2008, ever though energy suppliers had actually reduced their prices in 2009. In January, uSwitch.com warned energy bill payers they may get a “nasty shock” when their winter energy bills arrive. This is due to the annual cost of energy increasing by 36 per cent over the last two years.
