Water rates increases pushes up the cost of living

April 10, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Thousands of homes could be in need of debt help as utility prices rise again, according to a leading price comparison website. Uswitch has revealed that the annual household water bill in the UK will rise by 4.1% in 2009, increasing on average from £330 to £343. On the whole, utilities (heating, lighting and water) will cost families an additional £1,242 this year – meaning that households will have to spend an average £30 per week extra just to keep their property warm and bright with running water. Utility providers have been widely criticised by consumers, as firms were quick to increase their tariffs when the Bank of England implemented a series of interest rate rises. However, the dramatic base rate drop over the past few months has not been reflected in their subsequent price offers. Some campaigners have accused utility companies of working in conjunction with each other to keep prices high, by waiting for one firm to announce its tariff reductions before reducing their packages in line with their rival – rather than undercutting them to encourage competition. On 1 April, water bills in the UK experienced a 4.1% increase, which will cost consumers around £13 extra each year. Households concerned about covering the increasing cost of living could opt to install a water metre at their property, which would result in families only paying for the water they use, thus giving them the power to lower their monthly spend.
