Vauxhall set to slash jobs

February 18, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Following the announcement that Mini manufacturer BMW has cut 850 jobs at its Oxfordshire plant as it scales back production from seven to five days per week, Vauxhall could become the next manufacturer to reveal a string of redundancies. Over 2000 jobs at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory are currently in jeopardy as the firm’s American owner, General Motors, contemplates a reorganisation of its European operations. General Motors has already received a £9.4 billion handout from the US government, but the current economic downturn could lead to 10,000 job cuts – including 5,000 in the UK and 2,200 at Ellesmere Port alone. Ellesmere Port is one of North West England’s key income generators for Vauxhall, as well as being the site earmarked to produce Vauxhall’s new Astra later this year. It also provides business to tens of thousands of suppliers working in the local area. According to an article in the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for the company refused to comment on possible mass redundancies, but admitted that General Motors would be cutting its European production due to a decrease in sales. In light of its current cash-flow problems, General Motors must present a plan to the American government this week outlining how it intends to remain viable during the current slump in the automotive sales industry.
