UK shops record a further drop in sales

February 28, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Retail sales across the UK have continued to fall as the economic recession persists according to new statistics from the CBI business organisation. Many shoppers have resisted further credit card debt and have kept their hands in their pockets as the media continues to forecast doom and gloom. Just over a quarter of retailers recorded higher sales figures in the first half of February, compared to the same period in 2008. However 52% of retailers claimed that their figures were lower in relation to February last year. However, despite declining sales amongst UK shoppers, this month’s results were stronger than most, with supermarkets, footwear and leather stores performing best within the market. Andy Clarke, chairman of the CBI’s distributive trade’s survey panel, summarised:
“Conditions were not quite as harsh as they were last month and in the run-up to Christmas.”
Britain experienced some of its worst ever retail figures in December and January, as the UK shoppers cut down their Christmas lists and resisted sales bargains in a bid to save money.
