UK heading for savings crisis?

March 31, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Britain is facing a savings crisis a leading price comparison website has warned, with 24% of the nation admitting to having no cash put away in case of financial emergency. With growing redundancies and increasing economic strains, having a savings cushion is now more crucial than ever. However, recent falling interest rates have hit savers hard and led millions of Britons to become disillusioned with the concept of saving money. According to the figures released by the comparison site, 24% of Britons claim that they have not saved a penny over the last two years, whilst a further third (26%) admit to having less money put away than they did 24 months ago. ISAs have been hit particularly badly by credit crunch conditions, as only 6% of those polled said that they had utilised their full ISA allowance of £6,600 during the past two years. In fact, the average investment has been just £3,100 – half the maximum allowance. Survey spokesperson Kevin Mountford said:
“A quarter of people have no money at all put aside, which shows just how serious rising unemployment will become over the coming year.”
“Those with savings would be wise to make use of their cash ISA allowance. Most accounts allow you to withdraw cash without any loss of interest or tax implications should you need money at a later stage.”
