The elderly and the poor worst hit by recession

March 14, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
The Institute of Financial Services has warned that older and poorer households are facing the highest inflation rates in the company, potentially exacerbating Britain’s debt problems. High annual inflation in food and domestic energy costs is being blamed for the financial woes of Britain’s most vulnerable families, with the younger and richer population most likely to benefit from falling mortgage rates and vehicle fuel bills. The rate at which inflation is affecting households differs dramatically between classes according to their report, depending on whether the families surveyed have benefited from factors such as lower monthly repayments on variable rate mortgages. Older and poorer households are most at risk because they spend a higher percentage of their budget on food and fuel. Many politicians are extremely concerned by the report’s findings, with Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable stating that the recession has hit the UK’s most vulnerable the hardest.
“Those on higher incomes are now starting to see the benefits of very large falls in mortgage repayments and petrol costs. But for the elderly who spend the majority of their money on heating and food, inflation remains very high,” he said. “Deflation is not necessarily a great cause for alarm in the short term, but the Bank of England must be vigilant to ensure it does not become prolonged and systemic. “One of the worst things that can happen to any economy is that people start to believe that prices are on an ever-downward spiral and therefore delay making purchases.”
