Railway firm axes 450 jobs

April 9, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Hundreds of rail workers have been left in need of financial help after railway engineer Jarvis announced it plans to axe 450 jobs. The York-based company employs around 4,000 staff and carries out major maintenance and improvement projects for Network Rail. However a reduction in spending by Network Rail has led Jarvis to reveal that it will be streamlining its operation through a redundancy programme. The company claims that several new projects have been significantly delayed or downscaled due to the global economic downturn, and that 2009 profits would be lower than previous management expectations. Executive Chairman of the firm, Steven Norris, told the BBC website:
“It has been a painful process to absorb the impact of Network Rail’s sudden reduction in workload.”
Jarvis, which has 80 depots across the UK, is in consultation with unions over the cuts and gave no further details on affected sites. The business almost collapsed in 2004 after ambitious pitches led it to accumulate massive debts, leading Jarvis to sell off some parts of its business. Since then, Jarvis has also decided to close its freight container services – which operated between the Isle of Grain, Doncaster and Birmingham – operation due to poor demand.
