Parents chased for unpaid child maintenance

March 12, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
According to the BBC, the Child Support Agency is chasing parents of grown-up children to settle thousands of pounds of debt that they may not be aware is outstanding. Many of the parents affected may have accrued debts in the 1990s and, despite having no contact with the agency for several years, the CSA has warned that families should not assume their liability has ended unless they have been officially notified. The Child Support Agency has no time limit on when it can pursue outstanding arrears outside the court system. Michelle Counley of the National Association for Child Support Action (NASCA) told the BBC website:
“A lot of this enforcement action is taken against non-resident parents that have regularly supported their children, maybe as a private arrangement with the parent with care.” “But as benefits have been involved, there’s an issue there of not being able to acknowledge payments that have been made, hence the non-resident parent is charged for the whole period again.”
Since December 2007, the CSA has recovered £156 million in outstanding child maintenance payments, with a £7 million quarterly increase since September 2008. An agency spokesperson confirmed that the Child Support Agency has the right to take a fresh look at cases that may not have received full attention in the past. They added that the welfare of the child, the non-resident parent and any second family they have are always taken into consideration when pursuing unpaid debts.
