Over 50s are credit crunch savvy

March 6, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
According to new research, over 50s in Britain are becoming ‘recession savvy’ by turning to credit cards to protect their purchases. The survey, undertaken by Saga, revealed that almost half (46%) of the population have turned to plastic if they’re buying an expensive item, as they can claim a refund on purchases over £100 if the vendor goes into administration. This increases dramatically in the 50+ section, with three in five (58%) relying on credit cards for financial protection. Many people in the UK use their credit cards for the other benefits they can provide, including cashback and loyalty points. In particular, Britain’s older generation believe that plastic is a more convenient form of payment than carrying cash, with 15% of over 50s relying on card payments to cover the purchase of items they cannot afford to pay for in one go. Saga Group CEO Andrew Goodsell commented:
“The credit crunch has affected people in a number of ways and as a result people have become more wary, using credit cards as they provide added protection in uncertain times.”
The research revealed that most of the UK’s over 50s used credit cards to pay for holidays, eating out and supermarket shopping, with a third (30%) using their credit card abroad.
