Nationwide offers new financial lifeline to minority groups

April 10, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
Nationwide is offering debt help to thousands of Britons through a support programme for vulnerable members of society. The Nationwide Foundation has made £3.2 million available to help tackle the issues of housing and financial exclusion amongst disadvantaged groups. Two new grant programmes and an investor scheme will be open to charities that tackle social and financial issues. The Nationwide Foundation’s Investor Programme will award three-year grants of up to £300,000 to registered charities with incomes of less than £10 million. In addition, its Small Grants Programme will give £5,000 to charitable groups with incomes under £500,000. Grants of up to £300,000 will be available to any registered organisation that works to tackle financial exclusion affecting disadvantaged groups in the UK, or that tackle homelessness and housing issues among the vulnerable. The schemes have been designed to boost charities that help survivors of domestic abuse, older people – particularly those from minority groups, suffer from dementia or act as carer to another elderly person – and those aged 50 and over that are rurally isolated or have experienced financial abuse. Lisa Parker, chief executive of The Nationwide Foundation, said:
“As the economic situation continues to worsen, we feel it is important to launch a new grants programme that will help charities tackle the problems faced by people across the UK. Without financial education many people will not know how to survive the current harsh economic realities, which is why we are paying particular attention to the minority groups who are most vulnerable and most in need.”
The Nationwide Foundation revealed that one in three women using domestic violence services do not have a bank account, and that few housing schemes have been set up specifically for the black, minority and ethnic communities.
