Millions frightened of losing their homes

March 28, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
As Britain continues to fight financial troubles, almost six million homeowners have admitted that they fear their property may be repossessed. Increasing debt and rising unemployment levels have left many families across the UK in monetary dire straits in 2009, and new research from Which? has revealed that millions of homeowners are concerned that the recession may affect their ability to maintain their mortgage repayments. Almost two thirds (62%) of working Britons are concerned that their partner may lose their job, as thousands of companies across the country put redundancy plans into operation in order to cut costs. Four in ten joint income households (43%) fear that if the main breadwinner in their family loses their job, they may not be able to pay their mortgage on time. 4.2 million people in the UK are also worried about negative equity, for the economic slump and reduced lending has led the housing market to slow down – with the many homes falling in value. Homeowners in Britain are calling for the government to help property holders fight the credit crunch, with 73% claiming that more should be done to prevent repossessions. This includes exercising more discretion when it comes to handing out home loans, as three quarters of those surveyed (77%) think 100% mortgages should be outlawed. Which? is also calling for urgent measures to protect consumers against the threat of repossession, including the government forcing lenders to become part of the Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme and greater protection for people losing their homes due to unsecured debt.
