Construction firm latest casualty of recession

March 25, 2009    Posted in: Debt News
The Building company, Wrekin Construction Group has become the latest casualty of the credit crisis, with mass job losses taking place after the firm went into administration this week. 420 redundancies have been made across the group’s bases in Shropshire, Yorkshire, Northamptonshire and Cheshire, according to Wrekin Construction’s administrators Ernst and Young. A core group of 70 workers have been retained at its Shropshire headquarters in order to assist administrators with the winding down of the company. Wrekin has blamed cash flow problems for its collapse, claiming that it still had millions of pounds worth of orders, but that the Royal Bank of Scotland would not lend the firm sufficient credit to cover their cash flow glitch. Administration has led many of the company’s projects, including a £1 million construction job to build two bridges over the A55 in Wales, to come to a halt. Angry construction workers gathered at Wrekin’s headquarters this week demanding answers as to why they’ve been made redundant. Many construction firms across the country are now struggling in the wake of the recession, and the number of new homes currently being built is at a record low as potential homeowners struggle to secure a mortgage.
