Clear out your finances to boost your saving power

March 19, 2009    Posted in: Debt Management
Spring cleaning your spending habits could prove the key to alleviating your debt, or help you save towards a significant purchase. According to a survey by Halifax, first time buyers (FTBs) could add an extra £147 each month towards a potential home deposit just by taking control of their day-to-day spending. The study revealed that almost half (48%) of FTBs are not confident that they can save a sufficient deposit for their first house. However, many people are missing out on the chance to make everyday cutbacks that could prove the difference between renting and putting their first foot on the property ladder. Making small adjustments to your lifestyle such as home cooking instead of ordering takeaways or forgoing a shop-bought latte on the way to work could turn a negative bank balance into the positive. Halifax’s top recommended money-saving tip is to give up smoking, as kicking a 20-a-day cigarette habit could mean that you cash in to the tune of nearly £2,000 over 12 months. Cancelling an underused gym membership could also pay dividends, saving you over £450 each year, whilst boiling the kettle rather than buying a coffee will net you around £37 each week. You could save a further £400 in 2009 by cutting out one takeaway per week, or pocket more than £250 by reducing your beer intake by eight pints a month. Trading in bottled for tap water will increase your savings by more than £100. Other top money saving tips to help debt management include cycling rather than driving, switching energy suppliers or scouring the internet for discount vouchers.
