Britons stretching wages further

March 30, 2009    Posted in: Debt Management
British workers are making their salaries stretch further each month by savvier spending and by better debt management, according to a new survey by Abbey. The study revealed that the average monthly wage of £25,100 now goes 7% further for most Britons, as people cut back on daily essentials in order to tackle their debts or save during this time of financial instability. On average, UK workers now save £17.10 on food each week by more sensible supermarket shopping, with a further £17.27 reduction on their travel outgoings. Forgoing nights out has saved Britons £19.47 per week on entertainment, and cutting back on holidays will save people up to £229 during the course of the year. Greater financial awareness has also led people to reconsider their mortgage lenders, insurers and other regular commitments, saving them £139 this year on financial products. Overall, Britons will save around £1,746 in 2009 by managing their money better from day to day. Moreover, workers are looking to make further savings as 48% of those surveyed resolve to cut back on entertainment and more than half (55%) hope to reduce their food bill. The recession is leading increasing numbers to consider their purchases in greater detail, with thousands double checking prices for the best deal or waiting until an item goes on sale. A third (31%) of Britons also admitted to scouring car boot sales at the weekend for bargains, with an additional 40% choosing charity shops instead of high street stores.
