Simply in the red?

February 19, 2009    Posted in: Debt Advice
‘Money’s too tight to mention’ sang Simply Red back in 1985; if only they knew that their bestselling hit would become an anthem for the nation more than 20 years later. For many, being ‘in the red’ is an everyday reality. Increasing numbers of people are forced to retreat into overdrafts, load up credit cards or take out loans simply to cover day to day expenses, or struggle to cope with mortgage repayments. With utility bills increasing and unemployment rising, mounting debt levels will become an issue for even more households as the UK slips deeper into recession. However, the thought of paying back your debts can sometimes seem like an insurmountable problem. Many people face an array of debt, which can often prove difficult to manage. Varying minimum repayments and deadlines mean a bill can easily slip through the net, and a missed payment can be particularly detrimental those that are saddled with a high interest loan. If you are in a significant amount of debt it can also be difficult to ever imagine a positive bank balance. For instance, a graduate can accumulate £10,000 in university debts before they even receive their first pay cheque, whilst someone with arrears equal to their annual salary may struggle to see light at the end of the tunnel. Instead of worrying about the overall picture, often breaking down and simplifying your debt can prove the key to eradicating it. By rolling everything you owe into one manageable repayment each month you can take the first steps towards taking control of your debt management situation. Moreover, by setting a repayment figure within your budget, you can avoid accruing even further debt – giving you the power to cast aside your Simply Red theme song, dig out an Amy Winehouse record and celebrate being ‘back to black’!
